Introduction · 引言
You have found your seat at the Father’s table. You have learned to stay seated even when enemies surround you. Now the Father asks you to do something that changes everything — look up from your plate and notice the empty chairs.
The Father’s table is not full yet. There are people in your city, your nation, and across the world who do not know there is a seat for them. Evangelism — at its heart — is not a program or an event. It is the act of walking toward an empty chair and carrying the invitation.
Main Scripture ·
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Before Jesus gives any strategy for reaching the empty seats, he gives a command that surprises us — pray. Not plan. Not organize. Pray. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers. This tells us something important: the harvest belongs to God, not to us. We are responding to what He is already doing.
More workers means more teams. The harvest is too large for one person, one church, or one organization. This is why collaboration and multiplication matter — and why this session points directly toward Session 4.
Stay Focused on the Mission ·
“Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road.”
This instruction sounds strange at first. Why no greetings on the road? In the culture of the first century, greetings were elaborate and time-consuming. Jesus is not being rude — he is saying: stay focused. Don’t let good things distract you from the main thing. The empty seats are waiting. Don’t let the journey become the destination.
This is a word for every missionary: this is not a vacation. You are on assignment. The empty seats at the Father’s table are your purpose. Keep them in view.
Peace to This House ·
“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.”
Before you can fill an empty seat, you need to find the person who is open to receiving what you carry. Jesus calls this person the “person of peace” — someone God has already been preparing. They are not yet fully at the Father’s table, but they are leaning toward it. They welcome you. They listen. They stay in the conversation.
In practical terms, the person of peace often shows up as someone who is:
- Open to your compassion work or your vision for youth
- Willing to invite you into their community or network
- Asking questions rather than closing down
- Providing resources, hospitality, or access without being asked
Not every door will open. Jesus is honest about this — if peace is not received, it returns to you. You shake the dust off your feet and move on. This is not failure. It is discernment. The harvest is too important to spend all your time at a closed door.
Work With Local Context ·
“Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house.”
Stay in the same house. Don’t go from house to house. This is a principle of depth over breadth — of building something that lasts rather than touching many things lightly. Jesus is saying: commit to the context God has placed you in. Eat what they set before you. Adapt to what is already there.
In practical mission terms this means:
🏠 Build with what exists ·
Don’t import systems the local community can’t own or sustain. Upgrade what is already there.
🤝 Local ownership ·
Locals can volunteer, give in kind, open doors, and lead. Empower them — don’t replace them.
🔧 Same operating system ·
Work as closely as possible to how things already function in that culture and community.
⬆️ Upgrade, don’t replace ·
When you bring new tools, make sure they serve what already exists — not the other way around.
Eat What Is Set Before You · 吃他們所擺上的
“Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.'”
The fruit of mission is people seeing the glory of God in their actual context. You eat what they set before you — you enter their world — and then God moves. Signs. Healing. Testimony. People begin to see that the kingdom of God has come near. Not as a foreign import, but as something happening right in their own home, their own community.
The Door and the Meal ·
Felt Need vs Real Need ·
One of the most important skills in evangelism is knowing the difference between a felt need and a real need — and knowing how to use one to lead to the other.
A felt need is what a person thinks they need — the hunger they can name. It might be entertainment, belonging, someone to listen to them, practical help, healing, or simply a friend. A real need is what every person actually needs — Jesus, the gospel, discipleship, godly community, and the church.

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.”
The woman at the well came for water — a felt need. Jesus used that felt need as a door into the deepest conversation of her life. He didn’t ignore her thirst. He used it to lead her to living water. The felt need is the door. Jesus is the meal inside. Don’t just open the door — serve the full meal.
