NEW: Sharing Your Testimony as a New Creation

Overview

The NEW framework provides a clear, powerful approach to sharing your personal testimony in mission contexts. Based on the biblical truth that we are new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), this framework helps believers articulate their transformation story in a way that connects with others and highlights God’s redemptive work. An effective personal testimony is one of the most relational and impactful ways to share the gospel in any mission setting.

The NEW Framework

N – Negative Past Before Christ

The first element of an effective testimony is an honest account of life before knowing Christ:

  • Emotional Landscape: Describe your internal emotional reality before Christ (depression, anxiety, emptiness, purposelessness)
  • Destructive Patterns: Share struggles with sin, addictions, or harmful behaviors
  • Relational Brokenness: Explain how relationships were affected by your pre-Christ lifestyle
  • Spiritual Emptiness: Discuss your spiritual state and attempts to fill that void

“When we share our testimony, we want to be able to fully examine and explain what was our life truly like before Jesus Christ… what was our emotional landscape? Was there any depression, any unrest, any anxiety, suicidal thoughts, any vices or bad habits or sinful thoughts that were taking us over and consuming us?”

E – Encounter with Jesus

The turning point of every testimony is the moment of encountering Christ and making a decision to follow Him:

  • Specific Circumstances: Share how you first encountered Jesus (through a person, event, or experience)
  • Divine Timing: Highlight God’s perfect timing in reaching you
  • Decision Point: Describe the moment you decided to put your faith in Christ alone
  • Initial Changes: Share the immediate impact of this decision

“What was it like when you first encountered Jesus? Was it through an outreach, was it through a moment in a church service, was it a retreat, a conference, or a quiet moment with God that you didn’t expect a miracle?”

W – Walking with Him Now

The final component showcases the ongoing transformation that comes from life with Christ:

  • Emotional Transformation: Contrast your emotional state now with your past (joy, peace, purpose)
  • Spiritual Fruit: Highlight evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in your life
  • Purpose Discovery: Share how you’ve found meaning and direction in Christ
  • Relational Healing: Describe reconciliation, forgiveness, and new patterns in relationships

“Do you notice joy? Do you notice self-control? Is there a level of perseverance inside of you? Do you now have patience? Your emotional landscape should actually change once we find who Christ is… we may have been aimless before, but now we have a mission in God.”
