1. Introduction — Why We Prepare

Let me be direct with you for a moment. The wedding day is not the finish line — it is the starting line. Most couples spend months, even years, preparing for one day — the clothes, the food, the guests, the photos — but very little time preparing for the life that comes after that day. This workbook is not about planning the ceremony. It’s about preparing your heart.

Claudia and I learned this the hard way. Neither of us walked into marriage without scars. We had old patterns, different fears, different financial habits, and different family cultures. But what saved our marriage was not knowledge about marriage — it was mutual submission to Jesus.

This workbook is built on four rooms of a house: Calling, Prayer, Money, and Communication. These are not random topics — most marriages that break, break because of one of these four. Let’s build this house strong from the start.

2. What Is the Wedding Day, Really? — V.O.W.S.

The wedding day is not just a social event. It is not a legal contract that can be cancelled — it is a Covenant witnessed by God. In Malachi 2:14, the Lord says He is a witness between you and the wife of your youth — she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. When you speak your vows in front of everyone, you are making a sacred promise before God — not only before people.

V.O.W.S. — A Framework for Understanding Marriage

V — Vows — The Sacred Commitment

A wedding vow is not a feeling — it is a promise. You are promising to remain faithful whether you feel good or bad, in easy seasons and hard seasons.

O — Oneness — Becoming One Flesh

Genesis 2:24 — “A man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” This is not only physical — it is spiritual, emotional, and missional unity.

W — Worship — Making God the Center

Colossians 3:17 — whatever you do, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus. A good marriage is not designed to make you happy — it is designed to glorify God.

S — Sacrifice — Loving Like Christ Loved

Ephesians 5 teaches that husbands love their wives as Christ loved the church — by giving Himself up. Marriage requires laying down your personal rights to serve another.

Reflection Questions

1. Are you entering this marriage as a contract or a covenant? What’s the difference?
2. Which part of V.O.W.S. (Vows, Oneness, Worship, Sacrifice) do you feel least prepared for?
3. How will you prepare your heart before the wedding day so it doesn’t become “just an event”?

Practical Application

Write a draft of your vows now — before the wedding day. Don’t copy a template online. Write them in your own words and read them aloud to a mentor or spiritual covering before the actual day.

“I didn’t just marry a woman. I chose a culture for my children.”

ការហៅ — CALLING
3. CALLING

Personal Calling Before Shared Calling

Before you can have a shared vision with your spouse, you first need to know what God has called you to do. Ephesians 2:10 says, “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” You have a mission before you have a spouse. If you don’t know your mission, you will start treating that person as your mission — and that is too heavy a weight for any human being to carry.

Shared Calling — Becoming One Team

God does not only call you as individuals — He calls you as a couple, together. I always say, “I didn’t just choose a wife, I chose a culture of prayer for my children.” This means when you choose a life partner, you are choosing a direction together — not just choosing someone you like.

Warning Sign: Chemistry Is Not a Substitute for Calling

“Chemistry is not covenant.” Attraction can be a starting point, but it cannot be the foundation. Ask yourself: Can I serve God better with this person than without them?

Reflection Questions

1. Can you state your personal mission or calling in one or two short sentences?
2. Does your future spouse help you serve God better, or slow you down?
3. Ten years from now, what do you want your family to be doing for God’s Kingdom?
4. Which part of your calling are you still unclear about?

Practical Application

  1. As a couple, write one paragraph titled “Our Family Vision, 10 Years From Now.”
  2. Discuss each other’s gifts and passions — how do they complement each other?
  3. Pray together weekly, asking God to reveal His plan and mission for your family.

4. PRAYER

Two People Who Don’t Pray Together Are Not Yet a Team

You can live in the same house, share the same bank account, and share the same bed — but if you don’t pray together, you are not yet a spiritual team. Praying together as a couple is where trust, honesty, and vision are built. In my own life, I chose Claudia not only because I loved her, but because I saw a culture of prayer in her family home. That was one of the most important decisions of my life.

Why Is Praying Together Hard for New Couples?

Many people feel awkward, spiritually shy, or used to praying alone. Praying together exposes vulnerability — and that vulnerability isn’t comfortable at first. But this is where real intimacy is built: not in the bed, but on your knees.

A Rhythm of Prayer — The Five Table Questions

In my teaching about the dining table, I shared five questions that lead to depth. These same questions work beautifully as a couple’s prayer rhythm:

  • How are you really doing with God?
  • What has been hard recently?
  • What are you learning?
  • How can I pray for you?
  • Is there anything we need to clear between us?
“I urge that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.” — 1 Timothy 2:1

Reflection Questions

1. Have you ever prayed out loud together with the person you’re marrying? How did it feel?

Practical Application

  1. Set a fixed time each week — before and after the wedding — to pray together using the five questions above.
  2. Start small. Two minutes of praying out loud is better than none.
  3. Set up a small prayer corner in your new home — a table, a Bible, a candle — as a symbol of your commitment.

លុយកាក់ — MONEY
5. MONEY

Money Is Bigger Than It Should Be

In many cultures — including the cultures I’ve taught across Southeast Asia — money and social status play too large a role in choosing a partner. There’s a concept called “leveling up” — you marry someone because you want to level up, gain influence, get a better job, a better zip code. Let me be direct with you: you need to regularly ask yourself, “Do I like this person because I think they’ll make me look better?”

See Money, Influence, and Power the Way God Does

This doesn’t mean having no money is godly, and it doesn’t mean having no job is godly. But that’s not the heart of Jesus when it comes to these things — it goes deeper than looks, deeper than accolades. Ask yourself these questions: Are you, or your future spouse, responsible with money? Does money multiply with you, or does it just get drained?

Four Markers for Evaluating Money in a Relationship

  1. Responsibility — Does this person manage the resources they already have with wisdom?
  2. Making a Living — Are they diligent in work, or do they constantly depend on others?
  3. Generosity — Do you both live with a lifestyle of sharing, or a lifestyle of greed?
  4. Spiritual Compromise — Has money or status become a cover for spiritual compromise in this person’s life?
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” — Luke 12:15

Reflection Questions

1. Have you openly discussed debt, income, and spending habits with your future spouse?
2. Are you both people who run from greed, or people who flirt with it?
3. Has money ever been a source of conflict in the past? How did you resolve it?
4. Do you both share a common vision for generosity, savings, and giving?

Practical Application

  1. Hold a “financial transparency” meeting before the wedding — lay out each person’s debt, income, and spending habits.
  2. Decide in advance how you’ll manage money as a couple — shared account, separate, or combined.
  3. Set a percentage of income you will both consistently give or use for generosity.
  4. Create a simple 12-month plan for the first year of marriage — budget, savings, shared goals.

ការសន្ទនា — COMMUNICATION
6. COMMUNICATION

Listening Is Love

When you truly listen, you give someone the gift of being known. So often, conflict in marriage doesn’t happen because someone talks too much — but because no one is listening. James 1:19 tells us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.

Truth With Honor vs. Fake Peace

Not all peace is real peace, and not all directness is loving. Directness without honor wounds. Honor without truth becomes fake peace — keeping the surface smooth while resentment grows underneath is not peace, it’s just a pressure cooker.

Clarify Before You Accuse

Matthew 18:15 teaches that if your brother or sister sins against you, go and point out their fault directly — not to others first. In marriage, this principle is essential: speak TO the person, not ABOUT them. Don’t talk about your spouse to friends, parents, or social media before you talk to them directly.

Five Steps for a Hard Conversation

  1. Pray First — Ask God for the right words and the right heart before you open your mouth.
  2. Go Directly — Not to others first. Matthew 18:15 is not optional.
  3. Clarify Before You Accuse — Ask what they meant before assuming the worst.
  4. Truth With Honor — Be honest and be kind, both at the same time.
  5. Listen As Much As You Speak — Understanding is more important than winning.
“Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Christ.” — Ephesians 4:15

Reflection Questions

1. Do you tend toward directness without honor, or honor without truth?
2. Do you have a habit of talking about someone instead of talking to them directly?
3. Do either of you come from a family culture that handles conflict differently than the other?
4. Do you respond to conflict by exploding, or by staying silent until you explode?

When family pressure is real (about money, ethnicity, status, or timing), here is how to speak:

“I honor your concern for my future. I know you want me to be secure and cared for. I’m not rejecting our family — I’m trying to follow Jesus faithfully. I want your blessing, and I also want to be faithful to God.”

  • Remember: this is not a performance for guests — it is an oath before God.
  • Set aside time before the ceremony with close family to pray over the couple.
  • Remember, small mishaps (rain, delays, a broken light) don’t ruin the day — the covenant is what matters.

The First Months After the Wedding
