Part of: The Father Heart of God – D.A.D. Series
Focus: Align (Part 2 of 3)
Core Message: You learn to walk with God by watching those who walk with Him—alignment comes through relationship, not rules.
Key Scripture: John 5:19-20
Personal Story: Learning to Watch
When I first met Bill Corum, I was a young believer hungry to know God but unsure how to actually walk with Him. I had read books, listened to sermons, and tried to follow all the rules. But something was missing—I knew about God, but I didn’t know how to walk with Him.
Bill became a spiritual father to me. He didn’t just teach me theology; he showed me what it looked like to live in relationship with the Father. I watched how he prayed—not from duty, but from intimacy. I watched how he responded to difficulties—not with fear, but with trust. I watched how he heard God’s voice and obeyed—not from obligation, but from love.
One day, I asked him, “How do you know what God is saying?” He smiled and said, “I watch what the Father is doing, and I do the same thing. Just like Jesus.”
That’s when John 5:19 came alive to me: “The Son can do nothing of Himself, but only what He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son also does in the same way.”
Jesus didn’t operate from a rulebook. He operated from relationship. He watched the Father. He listened to the Father. He aligned His life with the Father’s heart.
This is what it means to align with God—not to follow a list of dos and don’ts, but to walk in step with the Spirit, learning from those who have gone before us, and imitating the Father as beloved children.
Key Scripture
John 5:19-20
“The Son can do nothing of Himself, but only what He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son also does in the same way. For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself does.”
Jesus’ entire ministry was based on watching and imitating the Father. He didn’t act independently. He aligned His life with what He saw the Father doing. This is the model for our lives—we learn by watching, we grow by imitating, and we walk in alignment through relationship.
Signs of a Broken “Alignment” Relationship
You may have a broken view of alignment if you:
1. Obey out of fear, not love
- You serve God like a slave afraid of punishment, not a son trusting the Father
- You feel anxious that God will reject you if you fail
- You believe: “I must obey or God will reject me”
2. Resist the Holy Spirit’s leading
- You ignore promptings, follow your own plans, or dismiss God’s gentle voice
- You prefer control over surrender, self-reliance over dependence
- You believe: “I know better than God what I need”
3. Imitate the world instead of the Father
- Your behavior, priorities, and values look more like the culture than Christ
- You compartmentalize faith—”spiritual” on Sundays, worldly the rest of the week
- You believe: “I can live however I want and still be God’s child”
4. Struggle with obedience as legalism
- You view obedience as a checklist to earn favor, not a response to love
- Following God feels like a burden instead of a joy
- You believe: “If I obey perfectly, then God will bless me”
5. Lack spiritual mentors or refuse to be teachable
- You isolate spiritually, refusing guidance or accountability
- You believe you can figure it out on your own
- You believe: “I don’t need anyone else to teach me about God”
6. Feel distant from God’s voice and direction
- You rarely sense the Holy Spirit’s leading or don’t know how to follow it
- You make decisions without seeking God’s wisdom
- You believe: “God doesn’t speak to me” or “I can’t hear His voice”
Replacing Lies with Truth
Truth #1: You Are Led by the Spirit as a Son, Not Driven by Fear as a Slave
The Lie: “I must obey or God will reject me.”
The Truth:
Romans 8:14-15
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'”
You are led by the Spirit, not driven by fear. A slave obeys to avoid punishment; a son obeys because he trusts his Father’s heart. God is not cracking a whip over your head—He’s gently leading you by the hand.
Galatians 5:18
“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law”
The Spirit leads you into freedom, not bondage. Obedience is not about keeping a list of rules—it’s about following a Person who loves you.
John 14:23
“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him”
Obedience flows from love, not fear. When you love Jesus, keeping His word becomes natural, not burdensome.
Truth #2: You Are Called to Imitate God as a Beloved Child
The Lie: “I can live however I want and still be God’s child.”
The Truth:
Ephesians 5:1-2
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God”
As a beloved child, you are called to imitate your Father. Children naturally copy their parents—they watch, learn, and mimic. The same is true spiritually. You learn to walk like Jesus by watching how He walked.
1 John 2:6
“Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked”
If you claim to be in Christ, your life should reflect Christ. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about direction. Are you moving toward Christlikeness or away from it?
John 5:19-20
“The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing… For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing”
Jesus watched the Father and did what He saw. This is the model for alignment—watching, learning, and imitating.
Truth #3: The Holy Spirit Teaches and Leads You into Truth
The Lie: “I can’t hear God’s voice. I don’t know how to follow Him.”
The Truth:
John 16:13
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth”
The Holy Spirit is your personal Guide. He doesn’t leave you to figure it out on your own. He speaks, teaches, and leads you into truth.
Romans 8:16
“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”
The Spirit confirms your identity and directs your path. He’s not silent—you just need to learn to recognize His voice.
Galatians 5:25
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit”
Walking with God is about keeping in step with the Spirit—listening when He speaks, obeying when He leads, resting when He pauses.
Isaiah 30:21
“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left”
God speaks and directs. His voice is clear when you learn to listen.
Truth #4: Obedience Is Alignment, Not Performance
The Lie: “If I obey perfectly, God will love me more.”
The Truth:
1 John 5:3
“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome”
God’s commands are not burdensome—they are pathways to intimacy. Obedience isn’t about earning God’s love; it’s about staying aligned with His heart.
John 15:10
“If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love”
Obedience keeps you in His love—not earns it. You already have His love; obedience is how you remain connected to it.
Philippians 2:13
“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure”
God works in you to create the desire and the ability to obey. Obedience is a partnership—He empowers what He requires.
Truth #5: You Are Co-Heirs with Christ, Learning from the Father
The Lie: “I’m alone in this. No one can help me follow God.”
The Truth:
Romans 8:17
“And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him”
You are a co-heir with Christ. You share in His inheritance and His mission. You are not alone—you are part of a family.
Hebrews 12:7-10
“It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?… He disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness”
The Father disciplines those He loves—not to punish, but to shape. Discipline is proof of sonship, not rejection.
Proverbs 27:17
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another”
God uses spiritual fathers, mentors, and brothers to sharpen you. You need people who have walked with God longer to show you the way.

Healing Prayers
Prayer #1: Releasing Fear-Based Obedience
“Abba Father, I confess that I have obeyed You out of fear, not love. I have served You like a slave afraid of punishment, not as a son who trusts Your goodness.
Forgive me for doubting Your heart. Forgive me for seeing obedience as a burden instead of a gift. Today, I renounce the spirit of slavery and receive the Spirit of adoption.
I declare: I am Your son. I am led by Your Spirit. I obey because I love You, not because I fear You. Fill me with Your love that casts out all fear. Teach me to follow You with joy and confidence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Prayer #2: Surrendering Control to the Holy Spirit’s Leading
“Holy Spirit, I confess that I have resisted Your leading. I have relied on my own understanding, followed my own plans, and ignored Your gentle voice.
Forgive me for choosing control over surrender. Forgive me for trusting myself more than You.
Today, I surrender. I invite You to lead me, teach me, and align my life with the Father’s will. Open my ears to hear Your voice. Soften my heart to obey Your promptings. Lead me in paths of righteousness for Your name’s sake.
I declare: I am led by the Spirit. I walk in step with You. I trust Your guidance over my own wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Prayer #3: Becoming an Imitator of God as a Beloved Child
“Abba Father, You have called me to be an imitator of You as a beloved child. Teach me to watch what You do and do likewise. Show me how to walk in love, just as Christ loved me and gave Himself for me.
I renounce the patterns of this world. I renounce living for myself, my comfort, or my reputation. I choose to align my life with Yours.
Transform my mind, renew my heart, and conform me to the image of Christ. Let my life be a fragrant offering—a reflection of Your love, grace, and holiness.
I declare: I am an imitator of God. I walk as Jesus walked. My life is aligned with the Father’s heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Prayer #4: Embracing Obedience as Alignment, Not Performance
“Father, I confess that I have seen obedience as a way to earn Your love or approval. I have carried the weight of perfectionism, believing that if I obey flawlessly, You will bless me.
Forgive me for making obedience about performance instead of relationship. Forgive me for treating Your commands as burdens instead of pathways to intimacy.
Today, I receive the truth: Your commandments are not burdensome. Obedience is alignment with Your heart, not a checklist to earn favor. You work in me both to will and to work for Your good pleasure.
I declare: Obedience is my joy, not my burden. I align my life with Yours because I am Your beloved child. I trust that You are faithful to complete the work You began in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Prayer #5: Receiving Spiritual Fathers and Mentors
“Father, thank You for the gift of spiritual fathers, mentors, and brothers and sisters who sharpen me. Forgive me for isolating myself, refusing to be teachable, or believing I don’t need others.
I renounce pride and independence. I receive the truth that iron sharpens iron, and You use others to shape me into Your image.
Surround me with godly mentors who follow You wholeheartedly. Give me a humble, teachable heart. Help me learn by watching those who walk with You, just as Jesus learned by watching You.
I declare: I am not alone. I am part of a family. I learn from spiritual fathers and walk alongside brothers and sisters in the faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Practical Application
This Week’s Challenge:
1. Daily Spirit Check-In
Each morning, ask the Holy Spirit: “What do You want to show me today?” Then pause and listen. Write down what you sense Him saying.
2. Watch and Imitate
Identify one person in your life who walks closely with God. Watch how they pray, how they respond to trials, how they love others. Ask them to mentor you in one area where you want to grow.
3. Obedience Step
Identify one area where the Holy Spirit has been prompting you to obey, but you’ve been resisting. Take one step of obedience this week—not to earn God’s love, but to align with His heart.
Reflection Questions
- Do you obey God out of love or fear? How can you tell the difference?
- In what areas of your life are you resisting the Holy Spirit’s leading? What would it look like to surrender control?
- Who has modeled the Father’s ways for you? How have they shaped your walk with God?
- What’s the difference between obedience as performance and obedience as alignment? How does that shift change the way you approach God?
Small Group Discussion
Opening Question:
Share about someone who has been a spiritual father or mentor to you. What did you learn from watching them?
Digging Deeper:
- Read John 5:19-20 together. What does it mean that Jesus only did what He saw the Father doing? How can we apply this to our own lives?
- Which of the “broken alignment” symptoms resonated most with you? Why?
- What obstacles keep you from being led by the Spirit? (Control, fear, pride, busyness, etc.)
- How can we create a culture in our community where spiritual mentorship and accountability are the norm?
Closing:
Pray for one another, asking the Holy Spirit to lead each person into deeper alignment with the Father. Ask God to bring spiritual fathers and mentors into your lives.
