Session 1: Delight Over Performance

Part of: The Father Heart of God – D.A.D. Series
Focus: Delight (Part 1 of 3)
Core Message: God’s love for you is not based on your performance—you are delighted in simply because you are His child.
Key Scripture: Matthew 3:17

Personal Story: The First Embrace

The moment I first held my daughter Ariela, something shifted in my understanding of God’s love. She hadn’t done anything yet. She hadn’t achieved a single accomplishment, spoken her first word, or taken her first step. She hadn’t earned my love or proved herself worthy of my delight.

And yet, holding her in my arms, I was overwhelmed with joy. I delighted in her simply because she was mine. She was my daughter, and that was enough.

In that moment, the Father whispered to my heart: “This is how I feel about you.”

For years, I had believed that God’s love was conditional—that I had to perform, achieve, and prove myself worthy of His approval. But watching Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3, I realized something profound: God the Father declared His delight in Jesus before Jesus had performed a single miracle, preached a single sermon, or died on the cross.

The Father’s delight came first. Identity before activity. Love before performance.

This is the heart of the Father—He delights in you not because of what you do, but because of who you are: His beloved child.

Key Scripture

Matthew 3:17
“And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.'”

Notice the timing: God declared His pleasure in Jesus before Jesus performed any miracles. Before the ministry. Before the miracles. Before the cross. The Father’s delight was rooted in relationship, not performance.

Signs of a Broken “Delight” Relationship

You may have a broken view of God’s delight if you:

1. Believe God only loves you when you perform well

  • You feel God’s approval depends on how much you pray, serve, or obey
  • You’re afraid to approach God after failure or sin
  • You believe: “God only loves me when I’m good”

2. Struggle to believe God delights in you personally

  • You see God as a distant judge, not a loving Father
  • You feel like you’re never good enough or always falling short
  • You believe: “God tolerates me but doesn’t delight in me”

3. Constantly strive for acceptance

  • You’re driven by guilt, shame, or the need to prove your worth
  • You measure your value by productivity and achievement
  • You believe: “I am only valuable when I’m useful”

4. Feel abandoned or rejected by God

  • You interpret difficulties as God’s punishment or disappointment
  • You feel invisible, forgotten, or unimportant to God
  • You believe: “God doesn’t see me” or “I’m not worth His attention”

5. Compare yourself to others

  • You measure your worth by others’ success or spirituality
  • You feel jealous of those who seem more blessed or favored
  • You believe: “I’ll never measure up” or “God loves them more than me”

Replacing Lies with Truth

Truth #1: You Are Loved Before You Perform

The Lie: “God only loves me when I’m good.”

The Truth:

Ephesians 1:4-5
“He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ”

God chose you before you were born, before you did anything right or wrong. His love is not a response to your behavior—it’s the foundation of your existence.

Matthew 3:17
“And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased'”

The Father declared His delight in Jesus before Jesus performed any miracles. Identity comes before activity. You are loved first, then you live out of that love.

Romans 8:15
“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'”

You are adopted as a son, not employed as a servant. Your relationship with God is based on family, not performance reviews.

Truth #2: You Are Delighted In, Not Tolerated

The Lie: “God tolerates me but doesn’t delight in me.”

The Truth:

Zephaniah 3:17
“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing”

God doesn’t just love you—He sings over you with joy. He doesn’t tolerate you; He celebrates you. His heart bursts with delight when He thinks of you.

1 John 3:1
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are”

You are not just called a child of God—you ARE a child of God. This isn’t a title you’re trying to earn; it’s an identity you already possess.

Romans 5:8
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”

God loved you at your worst. His love doesn’t depend on your best. If He loved you when you were His enemy, how much more does He love you now as His child?

Truth #3: Your Identity Is Secure in Christ

The Lie: “I’m not good enough. I’m a mistake.”

The Truth:

2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come”

You are not your past. You are a new creation. The old you—with all its failures, shame, and mistakes—has passed away. You are new.

John 1:12
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”

Your identity is not based on what you’ve done, but on who you’ve received. You are a child of God because you received Jesus, not because you earned it.

Ephesians 2:10
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them”

You are God’s masterpiece, not a mistake. You were carefully crafted, intentionally designed, and lovingly created for a purpose.

1 Peter 2:9
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession”

You are chosen, royal, holy, and treasured. This is your identity in Christ.

Truth #4: You Are Accepted, Not Rejected

The Lie: “I’m too broken. God has given up on me.”

The Truth:

Psalm 68:5
“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling”

Even if every earthly father fails you, your Heavenly Father never will. He is the Father to the fatherless. He sees you. He knows you. He has not abandoned you.

Romans 15:7
“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God”

Christ has welcomed you fully and completely. There is no probation period, no trial run. You are fully accepted in the Beloved.

Colossians 3:3
“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God”

Your life is hidden in Christ—you are safe, secure, and accepted. Nothing can separate you from His love.

Daily Declarations

Speak these truths aloud each morning to renew your mind:

  1. “I am God’s beloved child, chosen before the foundation of the world.” (Ephesians 1:4-5)
  2. “God delights in me, not because of what I do, but because of who I am in Christ.” (Zephaniah 3:17)
  3. “I am accepted, loved, and cherished by my Heavenly Father.” (Romans 15:7)
  4. “I am a new creation in Christ—the old is gone, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
  5. “I am royalty—chosen, holy, and belonging to God.” (1 Peter 2:9)
  6. “I am free from condemnation and shame because I am in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
  7. “I am God’s masterpiece, created for good works He prepared for me.” (Ephesians 2:10)
  8. “I am never alone or forsaken—my Father is always with me.” (Hebrews 13:5)
  9. “I have the Spirit of adoption, and I cry ‘Abba, Father’ with confidence.” (Romans 8:15)
  10. “I am loved with an everlasting love that nothing can separate me from.” (Romans 8:38-39)

Healing Prayers

Prayer #1: Releasing Performance-Based Love

“Abba Father, I confess I have believed the lie that Your love depends on my performance. I have strived, worked, and tried to earn what You freely give. Forgive me for doubting Your goodness and grace.

Today, I receive the truth: You chose me before I did anything. You loved me before I was born. You delight in me, not because I’m perfect, but because I’m Yours.

I release the need to perform for Your approval. I rest in the truth that I am Your beloved child, accepted and cherished in Christ. Fill me with the Spirit of adoption, that I may live as a son, not a slave. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Prayer #2: Healing from Rejection and Shame

“Heavenly Father, I bring You the wounds of rejection, abandonment, and shame. I have believed lies about my worth—that I’m too broken, too far gone, or not good enough for You.

Father, I renounce these lies. I declare that You are the Father to the fatherless, and You have never abandoned me. You see me, You know me, and You run toward me with open arms.

I receive Your truth: I am chosen. I am accepted. I am loved. I am hidden with Christ in You. Heal the father wounds in my heart and replace every lie with the truth of who I am in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Prayer #3: Declaring My Identity as God’s Son

“Abba Father, thank You for adopting me as Your son through Jesus Christ. Thank You for giving me the Spirit of adoption, by which I cry ‘Abba, Father.’

I declare today:

  • I am Your beloved child.
  • I am chosen and delighted in.
  • I am a new creation in Christ.
  • I am free from condemnation.
  • I am royalty—a child of the King.

I choose to live out of this identity, not out of fear, performance, or shame. Teach me to walk as a son who is loved, secure, and confident in Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Prayer #4: Receiving the Father’s Delight

“Father, I quiet my heart before You now. Speak to me. Show me how You see me.

I ask You to replace every lie I’ve believed with Your truth. Where I’ve felt rejected, speak acceptance. Where I’ve felt abandoned, speak presence. Where I’ve felt unworthy, speak delight.

Zephaniah 3:17 says You rejoice over me with gladness and exult over me with singing. Let me hear Your song over my life. Let me feel Your delight. I receive it now, not because I’ve earned it, but because You are a good Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Practical Application

This Week’s Challenge:

1. Daily Declarations
Speak the 10 identity declarations aloud each morning before you do anything else. Let God’s delight be the first voice you hear.

2. Silence the Lies
When you catch yourself thinking “I’m not good enough” or “God is disappointed in me,” stop and speak truth aloud. Replace the lie with one of the scriptures from this session.

3. Journal God’s Delight
Each day this week, write down one way you saw or felt God’s delight over you. It could be a sunset, a kind word from a friend, a moment of peace, or a sense of His presence.

Reflection Questions

  1. When was the first time you felt you had to earn love or approval? How has that shaped the way you relate to God?
  2. What lie about God’s love is hardest for you to let go of? Why?
  3. If you truly believed God delighted in you unconditionally, how would your life change this week?
  4. Who in your life needs to hear that they are loved before they perform? How can you reflect the Father’s heart to them?

Small Group Discussion

Opening Question:
Share about a time when someone showed you unconditional love. How did it make you feel?

Digging Deeper:

  1. Read Matthew 3:16-17 together. Why do you think the Father declared His delight in Jesus before Jesus had done any ministry? What does this teach us about God’s heart?
  2. Which of the “broken delight” symptoms resonated most with you? Why do you think that particular lie has been hard to shake?
  3. What obstacles keep you from believing God truly delights in you? (Perfectionism, past trauma, comparison, fear, etc.)
  4. What’s one practical way you can remind yourself daily that you are loved before you perform?

Closing:
Pray for one another, asking the Father to speak words of delight and identity over each person. Take time to listen and share what you sense God saying.
